Bladder Infection Symptom: Understanding the Symptoms of UTI

Not many people are aware of the fact that the urinary tract is our body’s filtering system for flushing out liquid wastes. And more women than men are susceptible to UTI as the chances of bacteria invading a woman’s body are more due to a shorter urinary tract tube.

While it’s true that most UTI's are not serious problems, but they can be painful. It’s been observed that approximately 50% of all women experience UTI at least once in her lifetime, though many women may go through the experience of several infections in their lifetime.

Antibiotics and urine infections

Antibiotic treatment is based on bladder infection symptom and usually involves courses of prescribed antibiotics that are effective in most cases but the more antibiotics taken the more resistant the bugs become to the antibiotics and eventually they stop being effective.

Reasons for a bladder infection

While one of the most common causes of UTI is transfer of bacteria to the rectum or the vagina from the bowels, these bacteria enter the urethra and journey up the UT causing inflammation.

The next common reason is sexual intercourse. The bacteria in the vaginal area can sometimes be spread into the urethra by the motion of the penis. Women who have sex with multiple partners on a frequent basis may experience bladder infections on more occasions that women who have just one sexual partner. Though it is rare, but some women tend to suffer from UTI every time they have sex.

Allot of people who are disabled suffer from a urine infection due to limited bladder function and catheters. In many people the cause of uti infections are lack of liquid dehydrating which leads to the urine becoming concentrated leading to bladder infections.

Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections

Understanding the causes for UTI can help prevent or minimize the chance of being infected. But more importantly, understanding the symptoms can help in seeking timely help for being treated by UTI.

Bladder infection symptoms can be easily identified. Some of the bladder infection symptoms include:

  • A strong and immediate urge to urinate
  • A sharp pain or a ‘burning’ sensation in the urethra when urine is released
  • Less than regular release of urine and may be tinged with blood
  • An urge to urinate frequently
  • Soreness in the lower abdomen, back or sides
  • Strong smell of urine
  • Cloudy urine

While most people urinate about six times a day, if the need to urinate occurs more often then this may be a bladder infection symptom.

Other bladder infection symptom may include back pain, chills, fever, nausea, and vomiting due to the fact that bacteria has entered the urethra and has spread to the kidneys, besides the previous symptoms of lower bladder infection.
